Does white noise actually help you focus while studying?

Repose was built with one use in mind: falling asleep. So it caught us off guard recently when a parent mentioned, almost in passing, that their kid studies with a white-noise app running in the background — not to sleep, to concentrate. It turns out that’s a lot more common than we realized, so we went looking into why.

The short answer

Background sound can help some people focus, under some conditions — it’s genuinely not a universal effect, and it’s not magic. The honest version is closer to “it depends on the person, the task, and the noise” than “white noise makes you focus.”

What the research actually points to

A few things show up consistently in the research on ambient sound and cognitive performance:

  • Moderate noise levels can help more than silence or loud noise. Work on ambient noise and cognitive performance has found that moderate background sound can support certain kinds of thinking better than dead silence — the theory is that a small amount of environmental stimulation keeps you slightly more alert without becoming a distraction. Too quiet and your mind wanders; too loud and it’s just noise.
  • Steady beats variable. Silence isn’t actually silent — a fridge hum, footsteps in the hallway, a notification buzz. Those unpredictable, variable sounds are what tend to break concentration, because your brain keeps flagging them as “new information, pay attention.” A steady, unchanging sound (rain, white noise, an ocean loop) doesn’t have that novelty spike, so it’s easier for your brain to tune out entirely — which is the actual goal, not “adding” sound so much as masking the more distracting sounds around you.
  • It seems to help attention-variable individuals more. Some research on background noise specifically points to bigger benefits for people whose attention tends to wander more easily, compared to people who already focus well in silence. If you’re someone who gets distracted by every small sound in a quiet room, masking noise may do more for you than it would for someone who doesn’t notice those sounds in the first place.

What this doesn’t mean

This isn’t a claim that white noise improves grades, treats attention difficulties, or works the same way for everyone. If you focus best in silence, adding sound could just be one more thing competing for your attention. The realistic framing is: it’s worth trying, it’s low-risk, and if it works for you, you’ll probably notice within one study session.

What to try

If you want to test it out:

  1. Start with something steady, not musical. Lyrics and melody pull on the same attention that reading and writing do — rain, ocean, or true white/brown noise doesn’t compete for that in the same way.
  2. Match intensity to task. Reading and reviewing notes can usually handle a louder, more textured sound (rain, ocean waves). Writing or problem-solving that needs more working memory tends to do better with something quieter and flatter.
  3. Notice what happens over a full session, not the first five minutes. Sound that seems pleasant at first can become fatiguing over an hour — if you find yourself annoyed by it later in a session, that’s useful information, not a failure.

Repose wasn’t originally built with studying in mind, but the same layered, gapless sounds that are meant to fade into the background of a bedroom work exactly the same way at a desk — steady enough to disappear, so what’s left is what you’re actually trying to focus on.
